Sexual appeal
There are messages written within us, messages we hold as core beliefs, and sometimes these messages are downright destructive. It’s important for us to look critically, identify any toxic beliefs, see them as the lies they are, and correct them. Over the next few weeks, let’s identify some of these lies.
How many of us carry this as a core belief — those who are sexually appealing are more valuable? I believe we are all sexually traumatized. I am, for obvious reasons, but we all are, to one degree or another. We’re pressured to be thin, muscle-bound. We’re pressured to have lovely hair, wear revealing clothing, and think about sex a whole lot. And the truth is? Well, sure sex is important, but does it deserve the amount of time, money, and effort we think we must devote to it?
We all could use a mental shift. Let’s take a look at just how we’re bending ourselves to the lie that sexual appeal equates with value. It simply does not, and the tendencies within us to bow to this lie can be identified and dropped, leaving us all far more free to be who we are created by God to be.
Reflection
How do you waste your time, money, and peace of mind on sexual appeal? How could you direct this energy toward a well-rounded, healthier self-concept?
Prayer
Dear God, it is no secret our society is addicted to sex, but this doesn’t mean I have to be. Help me to identify all the ways I bend to the lie that sexual appeal equals value. May I choose to respect myself, my body, others and others’ bodies. There is a great deal of freedom I can get back by working to correct this lie. Show me how, Lord. Amen.
