The challenge of God

Many of us consent to being far too powerless. “What impact can I make?” “I’m too wounded.” “I’m too busy to worry about those people or those issues.”

Our realm, the sphere of influence each of us has, isn’t “out there.” It isn’t with those people or those issues. It isn’t about dropping a little bit of good into a huge problem. And it can come about despite wounds.

The challenge of God for each of us is … us. God wants to help us to see, grow, think, act. We are far from powerless, and each step we take in growing ourselves makes a positive impact within, on those around us, and in the world at large. And given what Jesus did with such a small offering (two fish and five loaves), there’s no telling what He’ll do with every bit of growth we can work with Him to bring about.

Peter may give money to charities. He may sponsor a child’s education. But if Peter is prejudiced, addicted, and dismissive to his own family, what real impact does he make? If he were to bring his narrowmindedness, his addiction, and his cruelty to God and work with God to address those wounds, this impact is the one that stirs others, that promotes goodwill, that brings the Kingdom of God. The other is show, and it is powerless.

Each of us is far more influential and powerful than we are taught to believe. Our influence and power reside in our participation with God, and this work begins within.

Reflection

How are you working with God to become a better, bigger person?

Prayer

Okay, God, I realize doing good “out here” pales to the growth You are calling me to do within. I can’t be mean to my own family. I can’t nurture prejudice. I can’t feed my addictions. This is not how You call us to live out our lives. I am to be powerful and influential, and that power and influence manifests itself in patience, kindness, compassion, hope, honesty, and love. May I be willing to work with You and grow. Amen.
