In the middle

We must pay attention. God speaks within us. But God’s voice isn’t the only one, is it? There are other words in us, words that tell us to hide, to cower, to give up, to blame, shame, and see rejection, division, and failure. Those aren’t God’s words. God’s words give life.

Which words do we hear? Which words do we give ourselves to? Which words do we act on?

There is a middle space we all have access to. It is the space between perception and action. This is the area where God can do marvelous things, but only if we allow Him, if only we welcome and work with Him. This is the space where we can take what is not of God and flick it away from us, like the toxic thing it is. This is the space where we can be renewed, rejuvenated, rewired. We can take, “Life is against me,” and turn it around to, “How can I grow in this moment” We can see that “I miss out on everything” is really “I am here in this moment to be all I can be, with a sense of wonder and love.” God is in this middle space, and God is always ready to bring about in us all that is good.

Let’s meet God there.

Reflection

How can you work with God in the space between perception and action to shed what’s toxic and bring life to yourself and those around you?

Prayer

Dear God, I allow my mind to dwell on thoughts that leave me angry, hurt, suspicious, and powerless. Help me to meet you in the middle spaces and decide there and then to work with your grace to become the person you made me to be. I want to be free of this baggage, Lord. May I hear you far more than I hear what breaks me (and others) down. Amen.
