No accountability

What do we do with the fact that a candidate for governor in Ohio chooses to perpetuate the childhood abuse of his opponent by giving a national platform to her mother in which she calls her daughter a liar?

What do we do with the fact that many women have made allegations of sexual assault against our current president, allegations that seem in keeping with the character he has displayed through both word and action, and yet these accusations go nowhere?

What do we do with the fact that the Jeffrey Epstein files, detailing rampant sexual abuse of young women and girls, have been put on the back burner?

What do we do in a public square that may acknowledge such depraved actions occur, but see no reason for such actions to warrant accountability?

Oh, my God.

I have heard the words, “the poor man,” all too often. In reference to priests credibly accused, the current president, the college student who has “his whole life ahead of him.”

Victims of sexual abuse tell their stories, one after the other, to absolutely no avail. What do we do with this fact?

We take it to God, and the earth begins to shake.

See the reflection question and prayer below, and then join me again as we look at what happens to each of us when we commit to the pursuit of truth.

Reflection

In what ways do you see the public square giving more power to those who cause suffering than to the victims?

Prayer

Dear God, open our eyes to all the ways we remain still in the face of suffering. Open our eyes, our hearts, our minds. Teach us how to confront what is wrong in both little and big ways. We bring our agonies to you, Lord, knowing you will comfort, inform, and empower. Amen.
